The Museum of Vence

The Museum of Vence

A museum in the heart of the historic centre

Located in the heart of the historic centre, the Musée de Vence / Fondation Emile Hugues is among the must-see cultural attractions on the Côte d’Azur. All year round, in its bright rooms, the museum offers a programme of themed exhibitions representing modern and contemporary, French and international art.
A specialised library offers a large choice of books, posters, cards and objects related to the current exhibitions.
Built in the 17th century by the Seigneurs de Villeneuve, opposite the legendary ash immortalised by Soutine, the castle was gifted to the city in 1966 by Emile Hugues, former minister and mayor of Vence.

Opening hours:
From Tuesday to Sunday - 11am to 6pm  Closed on Mondays

From June 24th to December 31st
MATISSE AND VENCE, PURE EMOTION : works of the collection of the city of Vence

The exhibition presents a selection of the collection of the city, essentially constitued by graphic works. These works illustrate the main themes explored by the artist : the art of portrait and its variations, the chapel of the Rosary, the illustrated books.

From June 24th to December 31st
THE LIGHT OF MATISSE : works of twenty-three contemporary artists

The works which will be shown in this exhibition, particularly the big preparatory drawings of the windows are witnesses of this masterpiece created in Vence by Matisse which he himself considers as “the culmination of his quest”. Should he, between drawing and colour, have found the light the windows as a proof of the happy solution to which until now there was only opposition? Should the artist, with this quest of a blending of colour and light, have paved the way for later generations of artists?
