The Chapelle des Pénitents Blancs

The Chapelle des Pénitents Blancs

Classified as "Historic Monument".

The architectural originality of this chapel lies in its bell tower :  a cupola with a multi-coloured tiled roof. It was included in the list of historical monuments in 1944. From then on it has been housing numerous temporary exhibitions in line with the Musée de Vence / Fondation Emile Hugues.

Situated on the former Roman road leading to Castellane, expanded in the XVII century, this chapel was the seat and the praying area of the confraternity of the PénitentsBlancs, fully committed to serve the poor and the sick.

THE LIGHT OF MATISSE : works of twenty-three contemporary artists

The works which will be shown in this exhibition, particularly the big preparatory drawings of the windows are witnesses of this masterpiece created in Vence by Matisse which he himself considers as “the culmination of his quest”. Should he, between drawing and colour, have found the light the windows as a proof of the happy solution to which until now there was only opposition? Should the artist, with this quest of a blending of colour and light, have paved the way for later generations of artists?
